Kaduna Govt Disburses $21.5m World Bank’s Teachers/ Girl-Child Scholarship, School Devt Grant

The Kaduna State Government has commenced the disbursement of 21,568 million US dollars World Bank female teachers and gild-child scholarship, and schools development grant to beneficiaries.
The Executive Chairman, Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Malam Nasiru Umar, said that the grant was being disbursed under Global Partnership for Education/Nigerian Partnership for Education Project.
Umar explained that the grant was a World Bank intervention aimed at improving access and quality of basic education of the girl-child and almajiris.
He said that no fewer than 8,050 primary one to three girls from poor and backward communities across the state, would get N45, 000 each, under the girl-child scholarship.
He also said that 1,047 female teachers would equally receive N45,000 each under the female teacher scholarship scheme.
On schools development, Umar said that 4,500 nursery, primary and islamiya schools would get N400,000 each to improve school infrastructure.
According to him, 2,563 nursery, primary and islamiya schools benefited under the school development grant in 2016, leading to increase enrollment in public schools.
He commended the state government for releasing N312 million for Teacher Professional Development (TPD) in 2016.
“And currently, 11,312 teachers have been trained on leadership and teaching skills for improve efficiency.
“This is a clear demonstration of the government’s effort towards improving teachers capacity for effective teaching and learning in public schools.
“It is our hope that the government would equally released the N500 million earmarked for 2017 TPD.
Also speaking, Gov Nasir  El-Rufai said that the state government would make every effort to transform the education sector.
El-Rufai, who was represented by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Andrew Nok thanked the World Bank and other development partners for the support.
He charged teachers to take their profession seriously and support government effort to provide quality education in the state.
One of the beneficiaries, Zulai Ahmed, a teacher with U.B.E Hayin Na’iya, Igabi local government area of the state commended the world bank and the state government for making effort to improve the efficiency of teachers.
She said that the scholarship would go along way in encouraging teachers to update their knowledge, skills and capacity.
On her part, Halima Gambo, the mother of a seven year old Asma’u Yahaya, one of the beneficiary of the girl-child scholarship, equally thanked the world bank for supporting the education of her child.
According to her, the gesture was an encouragement to send all their girls to school.
