11 dead, many houses, cars destroyed as gas pipeline explodes in Lagos

No fewer than 11 persons were confirmed dead and many houses and cars destroyed after a gas pipeline exploded at Omo Onile area of Abule Ado on the outskirts of Lagos.

The cause of the explosion, which occured around 8.45am, was not known.

Some houses caught fire while some totally destroyed.

Some others lost their roofs in the explosion, which was heard over 80 kilometres away.

The damage was recorded a far as 20 kilometres away.

But there are fears that many more casualties may have been recorded.

A resident, who recorded a video of the area after the incident, called for quick rescue of people believed to be trapped in the collapsed houses.

Rescue and fire officials initially had a hard time locating the place.

They fought the fire and pulled bodies out of the wreckage of the buildings.

A number of school children of Bethren Girls College and their Primcipal died when the explosion tore through the school’s morning mass.

Some students were rescued alive

At least two persons were pulled out alive.
