Ekiti State Works and Transport Commissioner, Mrs Funmi Ogun, has said that Governor Ayodele Fayose has formed the habit of personally arresting traffic offenders in the state out of his passion for sanity on the roads.
The commissioner also said Fayose was ever persuaded that the culture of using the roads properly was inculcated in road users.
Ogun, who spoke in Ado Ekiti on Wednesday during the visit of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Zonal Commanding Officer in charge of Kogi, Kwara and Ekiti states, Dr Amauche Nwaka, to the Ekiti State Traffic Management Agency (EKSTMA), said Fayose had been committing enormous resources to roads construction and maintenance because of his belief in road infrastructure.
She, however, appealed to the Federal Government for maintenance of the federal roads in the state, saying: “We have not seen the impact of the Federal Government on federal roads in the state.
Special Assistant to the Governor on Environmental and Traffic Control, Mr Afolabi Ariyo, who said the formation of FRSC had reduced accident rate in the country, said the synergy between EKSTMA and FRSC had been responsible for high sanity on the roads in the state.
Ariyo described the FRSC as a blessing to Nigeria, saying its establishment in 1988 reduced yearly accidents from 25,792 to 9,694 in 2016.
He said: “The construction of new infrastructure by Governor Fayose calls for re-orientation of the populace to acquaint them with the traffic streams so as to avoid
vehicular-vehicular conflict on one hand and vehicular-pedestrian conflict on the other with the view to reducing to the barest minimum
incidences of road traffic accidents.
“It is in this area that EKSTMA and FRSC need to collaborate so that vehicular and pedestrian movements are seamless and devoid of
conflicts which could result in road crashes”, Ariyo pointed out.
Speaking, the FRSC Zonal Commanding Officer, Nwaka, who lauded the state of roads in Ekiti State, applauded the synergy between EKSTMA and FRSC, which she said had brought about improved traffic situation.
Nwaka said FRSC had been encouraging states to have traffic management outfits to cater for its inadequacies in the area of manpower to cover Nigeria adequately.
The Zonal Commander also lauded Governor Fayose for placing high premium on rehabilitation of roads , describing huge investment in road infrastructure as a veritable weapon to curtail accidents and
deaths on the roads.
She said: “We want to commend Ekiti for establishing EKSTMA, because it takes
great political will to be able to set up such agency. The first thing I noticed when I entered Ekiti was that the state has good road networks, they are motorable and this I think has been helping a lot.
“I want to commend all the agencies for collaborating well. There shouldn’t be any rivalry because we are all contributing to national development”, she said.
The FRSC boss hinted that the FRSC would soon begin a proficiency training for all the commercial and drivers in the employ of the
state civil service where certificates will be issued certifying them fit for the job.
