A female Nigerian migrant simply identified as Mercy Osabuohien has narrated how she was raped repeatedly in Libya by extortionists as she was trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea into Europe.
The 26-year-old woman from Edo State said she left Nigeria some months ago to seek a medical solution to a life-threatening stomach ailment in Europe and opted to travel through the desert and the Mediterranean Sea.
She told IRIN News that she unfortunately landed in the hands of criminals in Libya in May.
She said the man who was trying to arrange her passage into Italy gave her out to clients who raoed her and other women in similar circumstances countless times.
She evebtually founs her way out of Libya into Italy where she was interviewed for a special report on new methods being applied by Italy to force Libya to reduce deadly crossings across the sea.
“Sometimes the man would come. The man has many boys, a lot of boys that work with him, so beating us everyday, every night… Even raping, almost every night. Rape every night. He say we should pay money. If we don’t pay we don’t go anywhere.” Mercy said.
She added: “Every night, shooting guns up and down… No food. No water. And the water they have there is salty water. It’s not good for the stomach.”
Mercy was among recent arrivals in Rome and Sicily whom IRON News spoke to and they narrated their ugly experiences.
Another Nigerian, Vincent, told IRIN News that he fled the country’s South-East in 2016 following a violent security crackdown on pro+Biafran activists.
The 25-year-old, said: “When I reach in Libya, the same thing start happening in Libya. Problem everywhere,” he said. “You can’t even come out. You can’t even stroll or have the peace of mind. You can’t even sleep in Libya. Problem everywhere. They killed so many people there.”
